I get this question a lot and of course I always answer back in the comment section. However this time I think it is necessary to post my answer in a blog post so that many with the same question can be encouraged by it.
My answer to the sister with the same question:
“You remind me so much of myself. You are in a wonderful position where you have no choice but to depend on the Lord. You will be a great witness for God testifying about the vanity and futility of talent and ability concerning the things of God. God's kingdom is designed differently from the kingdom of this world because the world – how it operates and what it values – is the very antithesis of the wisdom of God. God is in the business of choosing the foolish things, the weak things, the base things, and things which are despised to confound the wise and bring them all to nothing. His purpose in doing so is that none of us can glory in His presence and think that it was our wonderful talent and ability that wrought such a great work of God (1Cor. 1:20-29). With that said, I am not extenuating the importance of practice, learning new dance vocabulary, talent, ability, or doing all that we can within our ability to perfect that which God has assigned us to; they all have their place and serve a purpose according to the will of God.
There are many who are trained in different types dance forms, but just because a person is trained not mean that God has called them to Dance Ministry. If God has called you to this ministry He will equip you. You did not just stumble upon this site. God has me here to help you, teach you and confirm what He has already spoken to you in order to strengthen you and encourage you. We are here to build each other up. My advice to you starting out is to daily, in the privacy of your home, worship God in dance during your prayer time. Just begin to move your arms and get to know your own range of motion. Do it standing still, just move your arms and bow and add on to it. Don’t worry about how it looks or if you’re doing it right. There is no right or wrong way. We put those stipulations on our dance and the dance of others because we want it to look like what they do in the secular world because that is what is and has been accepted.
One of the greatest mistakes we can make is to think that “real or true dance” is in the form of ballet, modern, jazz or other dance forms that we see today. Can we praise God in these forms of dance? Yes we can if and only if we know how to execute those dance forms properly. If not, it will look silly, amateurish and we can injure ourselves. Not only that but it will turn people off and they will not receive the ministry of dance God has put in us and God won’t get the glory because we have subjected ourselves to perpetrate a fraud in trying to give God and His people something we do not possess. My sister, even though you are not trained you still have a dance! Learn how to dance your praise! Let God give you His movements because it is only what He gives you (not what you copy from someone else) that will please Him and bless His people.”
Ain't He alright! I also want to encourage you all to stretch out. Learn the many different dance forms with what your time and resources allow. God does not call us because we have the ability, but because He knows what we will become as we grow in our calling. We are responsible for what He gives us. Are we going to hide it in the ground like the fearful servant (Matt. 25:14-30) or are we going to stretch out do all that God has put in our power to increase it?

I am very new to praise dance. I know God called me in this area of my ministry. I have tried to ignore it but I have ran long enough. I have to movements, however, putting it all together is my biggest struggle. I have prayed and sought the Lord and I am still lost and unsure of going forward. Please help me....Thanks
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. The fact that you prayed and sought the Lord is an example of your faith. Now you have to put your faith to work and you are doing that by asking your question here at PDCM. You are seeking out help and information because you have faith. God honors that (James 2:14-26)! There is a wealth of information about praise dance and tons of videos that you can watch, on YouTube for example, that you can glean from. Not copy and duplicate, but glean from. Practice the movements that you see to give yourself a foundation of movement vocabulary. In your prayer closet or time with the Lord - put on worship music and move. first start off with what you learned watching the videos and then use your creativity and passion for the Lord to begin to create your own. Learn in your prayer closet how to create your own love language to the Lord. This is where your dance really comes from and this is where God takes your little and increases it to much (Matt. 13:12). Learn your body also. Become familar with how you move as a dancer and what you are comfortable with. Practice moving your arms and look in the mirror as you do it and practice making those movements graceful and beautiful. You may also want to look at and practice the many dance forms that exist such as ballet, jazz or modern for example. You don't have to go all out and take classes at a studio (unless the Lord leads you) but get an understanding of the basics of the form to help you increase the building blocks of your foundation to which you will build on in your prayer and study time with the Lord. I really hope this helps. I have t teleconference on Monday at 9:30pm. The information is in the newest blog post. Join us.
